SUMMARY:Rain Gardens: How to Build Them by Penny Livingston
DESCRIPTION:Rain gardens are a practical way to manage rain water and storm water runoff. They can recharge groundwater aquifers\, reduce flooding and protect waterways from siltation. Penny Livingston has created water retention landscapes throughout her career as a permaculturist and a licensed landscape designer and contractor.  She will share step by step instructions on how to construct and maintain rain gardens as well as avoid potential pitfalls. \nSuggested Donation: $5

SUMMARY:Bird Watching at Freeland County Park — a Small Sit
DESCRIPTION:Come to Whidbey Audubon Society’s last small sit* before our wintering ducks and grebes depart for their breeding grounds! The sit begins at high tide when the diving birds should be closer to shore. We will scan Holmes Harbor for Goldeneyes\, Scoters\, Buffleheads\, Double-crested Cormorants and Horned Grebes. On the beach we will watch for Song Sparrows and in the grass Dark-eyed Juncos and White-crowned Sparrows. Less likely possibilities include early arriving Caspian Terns or Osprey and the ever unpredictable (but common in this part of Freeland) Bushtits.\n\n*The idea of a Small Sit is to offer a type of field trip that may allow some who are unable to attend traditional walking field trips an opportunity to go birding and enjoy the outdoors.\n\nCome for five minutes or the full two hours. Viewing will be from the picnic table in the grassy area between the kitchen shelter and the beach. A paved path leads from the paved parking lot to the first picnic table and then there are about 50 feet of flat short grass to get to the second picnic table. Chairs will also be available for attendees. A scope will be provided\, as well as loaner binoculars and field guides for use during the event. Families with young children are encouraged to attend. The playground is next to the viewing area so kids who don’t want to bird can play while their family members watch the birds. Portable restrooms are available at the park including a wheelchair accessible porta-potty. For more information or if you have questions\, contact the trip leader\, Madrone Ruggiero\, madrone@whidbeyaudubonsociety.org.

SUMMARY:Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship and other Banding Research
DESCRIPTION:Whidbey Audubon Society hosts ornithologist Scott Markowitz of the Puget Sound Bird Observatory for its monthly program meeting. He will take you through the reasoning and methodology of the Institute for Bird Population’s Monitoring of Avian Productivity and Survivorship study. He will share the how the Puget Sound Bird Observatory’s two stations operate\, and how the data contributes so the scientific understanding of bird population health. PSBO operates MAPS bird-banding stations that are part of a continent-wide network of research stations monitoring the reproduction and survival of bird populations. Markowitz is the director of research at PSBO and is a faculty fellow at Pacific Lutheran University. Scott is also working on the mechanics of sexual selection in Sialia mexicana (Western Bluebird) with regards to coloration as an honest indicator of successful foragers and the connection with the rate of extra-pair copulations\, of which he will also share. Doors open at 7 p.m. for socializing\, followed by a brief meeting at 7:15. The program begins at 7:30. This event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Global Earth Repair
DESCRIPTION:Whidbey Climate Action’s Island Conversation series will feature Michael Pilarski\, speaking about the best methods to re-green the planet\, rehydrate the land\, reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere and stabilize the climate. Michael has compiled a list of 130 nature-based solutions for planetary regeneration. Any one of these 130 solutions alone will not turn the tide\, but all of them working together can restore the Planet. \nMichael will introduce and invite you to the Global Earth Repair Convergence which will be held May 7-11\, 2026 in Port Townsend at Fort Worden. The Convergence is convening the largest gathering of world leaders in Earth Repair (nature-based) solutions ever held. Indigenous leaders\, Earth repair practitioners\, restoration scientists\, Earth defenders\, and grassroots organizers. Specialists in soil-building\, wetland restoration\, rehydrating the land\, biodiversity\, ocean regeneration\, agroforestry\, regenerative agriculture\, and the other 130 solutions we have identified. The Convergence will provide the best overview of how to get ourselves out of the mess we are in – in the shortest amount of time – with the most benefit for the world’s people and all other species.
